About The Gandhigram Institute of Rural Health & Family Welfare Trust, Dindigul
The Gandhigram Institute of Rural Health & Family Welfare Trust (GIRH&FWT) was established in 1964 by Dr. T.S. Soundram, with support from the Government of Tamil Nadu, the Government of India, and the Ford Foundation. It functions today as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, with the objective of promoting the implementation of National Health and Family Welfare programmes in rural areas through training, research, and community outreach. The institute offers three pioneer training courses: the Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT), a 2-year, 30-seat programme recognized by the Government of Tamil Nadu; the Post Graduate Diploma in Health Promotion and Education (PGDHPE), a 12-month, 30-seat programme affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai; and the Health Visitors Course, a 6-month promotional training programme for registered ANM/MPHW(F) health workers, with curriculum approved by the Indian Nursing Council (INC), New Delhi. The institute also houses a Population Research Centre (PRC) — one of 18 PRCs operating in India — which has been conducting research in maternal and child health, fertility, mortality, family planning, and rural health since 1959, alongside its Health & Family Welfare Training Centre (HFWTC), Department of Health Promotion and Education (DHPE), and Rural Health Training and Technology Institute (RHTTI) units.
